What is the Asphalt Calculator?
An asphalt calculator is a volume, tonnage, and cost estimator for hot mix asphalt (HMA) used to pave driveways, parking lots, roads, and other paved surfaces. You describe the area being paved, set a compacted thickness, choose an asphalt type — standard, hot mix, dense-graded, or a custom density — and optionally add a waste allowance. The tool returns volume, tonnage, truckload counts, and an optional cost estimate. It does not replace an engineered pavement design, geotechnical base assessment, or your paving contractor's mix specification for load-bearing roads or commercial lots.
Asphalt orders usually go wrong for one of three reasons: the compacted lift thickness is guessed instead of matched to the job — a driveway does not need road-grade thickness, and a road cannot get away with driveway-grade thickness — a supplier's per-tonne quote gets compared against a per-yard price with no common unit in between, or nobody works out how many truckloads a paving crew actually needs before the plant starts loading trucks. Workflow
How does it work?
Volume is area × thickness for most modes. Rectangle, driveway, parking lot, and road modes all use length × width — only the typical thickness default and the diagram differ, since a driveway, a parking lot, and a road are engineered to carry very different loads. Circles use πr² from diameter. Triangles use ½ × base × height. Known-area mode skips plan dimensions. Known-volume mode converts ft³, yd³, m³, litres, or US gallons straight into tonnage. The raw volume is multiplied by (1 + waste%/100) for spill and hand-work overage — asphalt does not get a separate settlement allowance the way loose fill or soil does, because compaction happens at the plant and under the paver and roller, not after dumping. Weight multiplies the final volume by the bulk density for the asphalt type selected. Truckloads divide total tonnage by your entered truck capacity in US tons, since asphalt is sold and hauled by weight, not by the yard. When you enter a unit price, the calculator adds delivery cost and tax on top of material cost for a full landed-cost estimate.

Area depends on mode: length × width for rectangles, driveways, parking lots, and roads, πr² for circles, ½ × base × height for triangles, or a direct area entry. Thickness is the compacted lift thickness required for the job — thin for a residential driveway, thicker for a road built to carry regular vehicle and truck traffic. Waste covers spill, hand-raking overage at edges and drains, and material lost during placement; asphalt compaction happens at the plant and under the roller, so there is no separate settlement allowance the way there is for loose fill. Weight = final volume × bulk density. Preset densities are typical hot-mix-asphalt planning values, not a universal constant — actual density depends on the aggregate blend, binder content, and air-void level in your specific mix design. Total landed cost adds a flat delivery fee and tax, calculated on material plus delivery, on top of the material cost from your entered unit price.

Residential driveway (imperial)
A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway needs 2.5 in of hot mix asphalt, with 10% waste, hauled at 10 US tons per truck.
Thickness 2.5 in ≈ 0.208 ft. Area = 480 ft². Raw volume = 100 ft³ ≈ 3.70 yd³ (≈ 2.83 m³). With 10% waste (×1.10) ≈ 4.07 yd³ (≈ 3.11 m³). At 2,400 kg/m³ (HMA) that is roughly 7,470 kg ≈ 8.24 US tons (7.47 tonnes) — one truckload on a 10-US-ton truck, about 82% full.

Parking lot resurfacing with delivery and tax
A contractor paves a 30 m × 18 m parking lot at 75 mm of dense-graded asphalt, 8% waste, at $145 per tonne plus a $350 flat delivery fee and 13% tax.
Area = 540 m². Raw volume = 40.5 m³; with 8% waste (×1.08) ≈ 43.74 m³. Weight ≈ 107.2 tonnes at 2,450 kg/m³ (dense-graded). Material cost ≈ $15,544 at $145/tonne; plus $350 delivery = $15,894; 13% tax on that subtotal ≈ $2,066; total landed cost ≈ $17,960. About 12 truckloads on a 10-US-ton (≈ 9.07-tonne) truck.

How asphalt quantity is calculated
Asphalt quantity starts with area × compacted thickness. That volume is then multiplied by a bulk density to get weight — the unit most plants and haulers actually sell and deliver. Waste covers spill and hand-work overage at edges and drains; it is not a post-placement settlement factor the way loose fill or topsoil uses.
Canadian projects often mix millimetres and metres on drawings with supplier quotes in metric tonnes, while some crews still talk in square feet and US tons. Reporting cubic metres, cubic yards, tonnes, and US tons together keeps owners, contractors, and dispatchers on the same number.
Asphalt thickness guide
Thickness is the compacted lift depth after rolling — not the loose depth in the truck. Residential driveways commonly sit near 2–3 inches (50–75 mm). Parking lots often start around 3 inches (75 mm). Roads and streets that carry regular vehicle and truck traffic are frequently 4 inches (100 mm) or more, sometimes in multiple lifts.
Local frost depth, subgrade strength, and traffic class can push those numbers higher. Use the driveway, parking lot, and road modes as planning defaults, then confirm against your paving contractor's pavement design.

Asphalt density and tonnage guide
Density converts volume into weight. Typical hot-mix asphalt planning densities sit near 2,320–2,450 kg/m³ depending on aggregate gradation, binder content, and target air voids. No single density is universally correct — enter a custom kg/m³ from the plant mix ticket whenever you have it.
US tons divide kilograms by 2,000 lb (≈ 907.185 kg). Metric tonnes divide by 1,000 kg. Keeping both visible avoids confusing a US-ton quote with a Canadian tonne quote on the same job.
Asphalt waste guide
Waste covers material lost to spill, edge trimming, hand-raking around drains and obstacles, and small layout adjustments. Five to ten percent is a common starting range for straightforward driveways; irregular lots, many penetrations, or first-time crews may need closer to 10–15%.
Unlike fill dirt or topsoil, asphalt does not need a separate compaction or settlement field — densification happens at the plant and under the paver and roller.
Asphalt cost and truckload planning
Most North American suppliers quote hot mix by weight (US ton or metric tonne). Some contractors still bid by the cubic yard. Enter the unit that matches the quote, then optionally add a flat delivery fee and sales tax for a landed-cost estimate.
